Rectify: S1

recify s1Where the hell have I been? Recify premiered last Fall on the Sundance Channel but I just heard about it this week.  Shame on me. I binged watched all six episodes of the first season in two days thanks to Netflix streaming. I was blown away by the complexity and subtly of this brave new television series. Rectify tells the story of Daniel Holden who gets released from prison after spending the past 19 years on death row for a murder he didn’t commit. The intelligent writing and quiet beauty of the series immediately pushes this series to the top of the heap in an already crowded season of outstanding American television.  You can almost hear Daniel thinking as he observes the strange and obscene world around him. Created by Ray McKinnon and starring Aden Young as Daniel, Rectify features a brilliant cast of character actors and newcomers including J. Smith-Cameron, Clayne Crawford, Luke Kirby, Jake Austin Walker, Abigail Spencer, Adelaide Clemens,Johnny Ray Gill, Jayson Warner Smith, Bruce McKinnon. I don’t often say this, but you need to drop what you’re doing right now and watch Rectify. Immediately. Rectify is available on DVD as well as streaming. 5 out of 5 for this instant television classic.

hat tip to my work pal Nicole for singing the praises of Recify.
