Undressing Israel: Gay Men in the Promised Land

undressing israelPorn producer Michael Lucas travels to Tel Aviv to create the documentary, Undressing Israel: Gay Men in the Promised Land chronicling the lives of gay men in Israel. Interviewing both celebrities (Ivri Lider, Eytan Fox) and regular folks, Lucas attempts to capture the charm and allure of Israel – specifically Tel Aviv against the backdrop of what to us seems to be eternal conflict and war. First thing to be said is that the producer’s regular job and the provocative title should be ignored. This a very PG documentary on gay men living their lives in Israel. Lucas comes off as a travel promoter for the country to the extent that most of the talking head questions seem created to illicit only the very best responses from the film’s participants. I would have liked seeing lesbians in the film, but Lucas stuck with what he knows best – gay men and that’s alright. I’d like to see a lesbian companion piece to this documentary. Are lesbians afforded the same open lives in Israel as gay men? At 46 minutes in length, Undressing Israel ends up more as a fun romp through Tel Aviv rather than a serious look at why gays do so well in this country. And by the way do all gays do well in Israel? I would have enjoyed hearing a little more detail but for what it is, Lucas did a fine job. 3 out of 5.
