Out in the Line-Up

out in the line upFascinating one-hour documentary, Out in the Line-Up on the lives of gay surfers. I didn’t realize a sport could be more homophobic than American football, baseball, or International football (soccer), but apparently surfing has been riddled with homophobia and misogyny from the beginning. The great thing about Out in the Line-Up is the balance between male and female surfers interviewed. The surfers interviewed are at all levels in their comfort zone of coming out which may make some viewers uncomfortable. I say bravo to these brave women and men who chose to tell their personal truths to the camera without polish. Films like these and the people who inhabit them can only help to make the world a better place. Kudos to director Ian W. Thomson and the participants from around the globe. 4 out of 5 for this important sports documentary.
