Un amour à taire (A Love to Hide)

a love to hideFrench TV Holocaust melodrama Un amour à taire (A Love to Hide) focuses on Jean, a gay male Parisian who hides Sara, a Jewish childhood friend with his lover Philippe as WWII begins in occupied France. Jean’s brother Jacques gets released from prison and reacts negatively to Jean’s homosexuality and Sara’s attraction to Jean. Tragic complications appear around every corner as Sara becomes Yvonne in an attempt to stay safe. The same can’t be said for the two men who face grave consequences for being gay. Although this film can be looked on as lighter fare, I found the genre of melodrama helped balance the limitations. While not a perfect film, A Love to Hide shines a much-needed light on the over 100,000 people who were arrested during WWII for being gay and lesbian. The cast and crew do a good job telling this tragically true story. 3.5 out of 5.
