The Killing (1956)

killingWatched Criterion’s remastered version of Stanley Kubrick’s noir masterpiece, The Killing this weekend on DVD from Netflix. Loved the repeated climatic shots from different character’s perspectives. Must have freaked people out 60 years ago to see the same scene over and over again. Great performances from a mountain of character actors including Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Timothy Carey, Elisha Cook Jr., and Marie Windsor.  The strong man scene with Kola Kwariani cracked me up as Kola conjured up his professional wrestling moves in addition to the choreographed ripped shirt. The spinning, the flipping, I was howling. Kubrick lays it on thick with the help of a great screenplay from Jim Thompson. Anyone interested in film noir, 50’s cinema or the evolution of Kubrick’s craft should take a look at The Killing. The orchestrated race track heist scheme makes me wonder how much inspiration this gave to the original Ocean’s 11 as well as the remake, Ocean’s Eleven. 4 out of 5 for The Killing.
