Silkwood

silkwoodReleased in 1983 and based on real life events from the mid-70’s, Mike Nichols biopic Silkwood on the unlikely activist, Karen Silkwood still carries a punch over 30 years later. The score gets a bit tv movie schmaltzy, but performances from Meryl Streep, Cher, and Kurt Russell override any dating the film feels. Still a strong film about a whistle-blower who pays for the truth with her life. And unfortunately continues to be topical today. I remember being introduced to Karen Silkwood through the Holly Near song, It Could Have Been Me written in 1974 which I must have heard for the first time in 1979 or 1980. Nichols Silkwood remains a powerful drama about an imperfect young woman who takes on a deadly corporation. 4 out of 5.
