Beautiful Something

beautiful somethingDirector Joseph Graham’s Beautiful Something crafts a mix of modern urban stories based in Philadelphia on the MSM (men who have sex with men) experience. I began writing gay male experience, but a few of the stories focus on men who aren’t necessarily embracing a gay identity. Well-crafted cinematography and locations, mostly solid acting from the diverse cast. The stories unfortunately felt worn out and stereotypical. I wanted to explore new territory, but kept getting dragged into outdated clichés – the gay man in love with his straight best friend, the closeted man having post-coital regret, the older gay man with money cruising for a pure ideal, the messy writer wasting his life, and the distracted artist who keeps a younger man around as his muse and play thing. All of these stories could have surprised me. Instead they felt too obvious. 2.5 out of 5 for Beautiful Something.

Many thanks to Justin Cook Public Relations for the screener from Ariztical Entertainment.
