99 Homes

99 homesFinally caught up with the 2014 mortgage crisis thriller, 99 Homes. Set in Orlando, Florida shortly after the crash, Andrew Garfield plays Dennis Nash, a single father who gets evicted from his family home. With no work and nowhere to turn, his only option is to work for a former real estate agent who now purchases foreclosed homes. Michael Shannon plays the devil Garfield knows and Laura Dern has an unfortunately small role playing Dennis’s Mom. Sickeningly tense, this morality roller coaster from director Ramin Bahrani packs a lot of punch into 112 minutes. Much better than I expected, 99 Homes doesn’t paint a pretty picture. Instead it offers a glimpse into corrupt rules, ruthless capitalists and desperate workers. 4 out of 5 for the thought-provoking 99 Homes.
