Prime Suspect: Series 1 (Blu-ray)

Prime Suspect S1Finally dipping back into the Prime Suspect universe now that I have access to all seven seasons on Blu-ray. Began last weekend with Series 1 which introduces us to Helen Mirren’s iconic character, Jane Tennison. It’s 1991 and Jane’s fighting her way to become the first female Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) to head a murder investigation. 25 years ago looks like another century. I realize it was technically. But I felt the world was more sophisticated. Tennison battles sexism, misogyny, workplace bullies, and has to prove herself a hundred times more than any man ever had to in order to hold on to her position. The quality of Prime Suspect never falters. I sat there thinking, “this is better than any movie I’ve seen in ages.” Mirren was born to play the role. But she certainly gets help from director Christopher Menaul and novelist Linda LaPlante who transforms her Jane Tennison stories for the small screen. The supporting actors who make up the suspects and Jane’s cohorts also deserve accolades. Riveting, complex, nuanced, engrossing are a few words that come to mind when I think of my electrifying experience watching Prime Suspect again after all these years. Thrilled to be able to review it here on Reel Charlie. A perfect 5 out of 5.
