Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life

gilmore-girls-a-year-in-the-lifeThe Netflix four-part event, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premiered this past Friday. All four episodes are available to binge on and chill over. I’m not sure what to say about this ultimate comfort food show? Where do I begin? Now that I’ve watched it all the way through, my mind is mush. Not in a bad way. It’s just that anything I think about saying sounds trite and shallow. So let me start with the obvious: thank you to the creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino for breathing life back into this fan favorite series. Thanks to the amazing cast both principal and secondary character roles who came back en masse to the delight of us all. And thanks to the magic the writers and directors created through dialogue and music. I particularly loved the creative use of music throughout all four episodes. A wonderful balance to the rapid fire banter between Lorelei squared! So many memories. How many times do we want to revisit our favorite characters? How often do we actually get to do it? The new Netflix Gilmore Girls succeeds beautifully. I laughed, I got most of the pop culture references, I marveled at the homage to Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman, and I cried profusely at the cemetery and through the final moments of the Fall episode. Thank you for finally creating the perfect ending to the series. And for perhaps opening the possibility of a sequel? Please! Meanwhile a 5 out of 5 for the wonderfully sweet and sublime Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Oh one more thing… yes Emily continues to be my favorite character. But let’s talk product placement. Forget about all those Macs. Wasn’t it genius to include The Returned into the series – Lorelei and Luke watching the original French subtitled series after dinner one night. So random, so perfect. Such a nice thank you to Netflix.
