20th Century Women

Mike Mills (Beginners) character-driven film, 20th Century Women follows the story of a divorced landlady (Annette Bening) raising her only child (Lucas Jade Zumann) with a house full of borders including Great Gerwig, Billy Crudup, and Elle Fanning as son Jamie’s infatuation. Bening’s Dorothea looks for help from her tenants and what she gets is unexpected and magical. 20th Century Women‘s script drives the film. Mike Mills writing turns ordinary scenes into deeply intimate moments between characters. I could have used more background on Dorothea and some editing. That said, the film satisfies thanks to Mills expertise and a strong, confident cast. Just a hair under 4 out of 5.
