The Great British Baking Show: Season 5 (U.S., Netflix)

The Great British Bake Off, Back row L to R: Steven, Tom, Liam, Sophie, Peter, James, Chris. Front Row L to R: Julia, Kate, Stacey, Flo, Yan

I have no idea how we got two Season 5s for The Great British Baking Show. The first Season 5 was on PBS back in August. This Season 5 is on Netflix. I kid you not, you can check their websites. I curse the American distributors for not following the British numbering system, since technically this season is 8 in the U.K. Confused? Don’t be. Just sit back, relax, watch the new show on Netflix and prepared to (continue to) be dazzled by congeniality, warmth, laughter, and mouth-watering treats. This season premiered in 2017 over in England. It features new judge Prue Leith whom I adore. Yes it was hard filling Mary Berry’s shoes, but Prue brought her own personality, style (those glasses, those necklaces!), and expertise to the tent. Mel and Sue are gone (tear), but in their place blooms an odd couple in the form of Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding. Sandi’s the straight woman to Noel’s gothy, gender fluid love sponge. They make a good team, helping the contestants relax and find a laugh among the stress of making the perfect Paul Hollywood approved baked goods. I adore this show. The changes this season didn’t bother me. If anything, it reinvigorated the show. Even Paul seemed more animated. Contestant favorites this season include Steven, Sophie, Kate, Stacey, and Yan. I love, love, love The Great British Baking Show. Thank you all for giving us a reprieve from dealing with the horrors of our collapsing empire. The Brits always come through. And this time, they’re bringing treats. 5 out of 5.
