Brooke Shields: Pretty Baby

Brooke Shields two part documentary, Brook Shields: Pretty Baby rips the bandage off her childhood. Shields doesn’t manipulate her viewers. She doesn’t use the documentary to provoke or entice the viewers into buying some product she is selling. She uses her life experience to shine a bright light on how young people are manipulated in the media, over 40 years after her childhood career began. She avoids blame and simply tells the truth with grace and clarity. I never followed Brooke’s career much. I saw Blue Lagoon, but obviously more for Christopher Atkins. I never saw Pretty Baby. I had no interest in her Calvin Klein jeans campaign. And I only watched a few episodes of Suddenly Susan which seemed so tame after her provocative childhood career. The documentary is in two parts. It’s a fascinating look at one woman who somehow survived all the exploitation and mistakes. Remarkable. 4 out of 5.

Brook Shields: Pretty Baby currently streams on Netflix.
